ABOUT

We were on-site from September 2007 to refurbish the residence and studios of Rachel Whiteread and Marcus Taylor.

The concept was to re-assess the relationship between the family and the building. Our attentions were focused on creating a sequence of very human spaces that addressed the ways in which the family's living habits had evolved since moving in. This included a reading space linking the existing second floor living spaces, a greenhouse, an external stair and a small private roof terrace overlooking a Sedum roof. Central to these spaces was the design of a large flat roof with skylights and generous external overhangs to protect both the indoor and outdoor spaces from the elements. We also installed solar thermal panels to contribute towards the hot water requirement of the building.
